The Rise of Team Coaching

Deloitte, over the past couple of years in its Global Human Capital Trends study, have highlighted the rapid shift from hierarchies to teams in organisations.  The fact is that it isn’t so much team development that has been on the increase so much as it’s been the need for interconnected teams. The increased and increasing complexity of business requires teams who consistently deliver greater value and impact within and across their stakeholder systems.

The future is bigger and more challenging than any of us can grasp or address, alone or collectively. It requires new human levels of empathy and engagement, systemic thinking, collaboration and teamwork. This has prompted the rising demand for specifically trained team coaches and team coaching within organisational contexts.

Team Coach Training for Leaders

At a certain level, professionally trained coaches are preferred for both individual and team coaching in organisations, and with good reason. However, organisations have an increasing appetite to build their own learning culture internally, and it would be beyond the budget of most to make professional coaching available to all employees.  Neither would this be necessary. What makes all the difference is ensuring that anyone in a leadership position is equipped with coaching skills, and that the effective use of these this is built into performance recognition structures.

According to Building a Coaching Culture for Change Management, a 2018 study by the Human Capital Institute (HCI) and the International Coaching Federation (ICF), 33% of organisations surveyed around the world now offer training for managers and leaders in the use of coaching skills.

Utilising a Systemic Approach

Team coaching was a small fragment of the coaching profession when we introduced Systemic Team Coaching to Southern Africa, over six years ago. Whilst most organisations saw benefit in using executive coaches to work with their senior and high-potential management, at that time ‘team coaching’ was a broad generalist term that included facilitation, workshops and team building.  With the rapid advancement of the VUCA world since then, and the increased complexity of doing business in today’s world, it is now recognised that team coaching is a specialist form of coaching in its own right, requiring specific skills far beyond those taught in conventional coach training programmes.  

What is Systemic Team Coaching

The concepts of Systemic Team Coaching were developed by Professor Peter Hawkins during his tenure as Professor of Leadership at Henley Business School providing a combination of academic rigour and real-world business practicality. They and are continually updated in response to the dynamic nature of today’s business environment.

In a nutshell, Systemic Team Coaching enables teams to align towards a common purpose and represent the whole team when engaging with stakeholders at various levels. They learn to co-operate across diversity and boundaries, develop collective leadership and jointly transform the business – all whilst achieving individual and collective performance objectives. We’ve never seen the kind of impact achieved in other forms of coaching as we have with Systemic Team Coaching.

The ways in which the team relates to and serves its business environment are reframed and enhanced. Using a future-back, outside-in lens, as much emphasis is placed on how the team leads change with their stakeholders as to how the team functions internally, enabling sustainable change-agility and resilience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Certificate and Diploma Programmes Accredited?

The Systemic Team Coaching Certificate is accredited with the International Coaching Federation (ICF) for 19 CCEUs (Continuing Coach Education Units). The Diploma is accredited with the International Coaching Federation (ICF) for 121 ACSTH (Approved Coach Specific Training Hours) and can be used towards PCC accreditation.

What is the duration of the Certificate and Diploma Programmes?

Th Certificate is a 3-day experiential programme that explores how to coach teams to consider both their internal dynamics and external stakeholders working with the connections and influences within and outside the team.

The Diploma builds on the Certificate with a 12-month stimulating, practical and multifaceted learning experience that empowers experienced coaches, organisational development consultants and team leaders to become amongst the most highly skilled and qualified team coaches in the field today.

Who is the Certificate Programme for?

This programme is suitable to those who have experience in facilitation, coaching and developing teams or who have worked in organisational development.

People on previous courses have included:

  • Organisational Development and Change Management consultants
  • Chief Executive Officers, Senior Managers and Business Owners
  • External and Internal Executive Coaching professionals
  • Human Resources Business Partners, Learning and Development and Talent Management professionals

Who is the Diploma Programme for?

This programme is designed to build on your substantial existing knowledge and experience of creating, developing or leading teams. You must have completed the Systemic Team Coaching Certificate programme before you can start the Master Practitioner Diploma programme.

In addition, you must be:

  1.  An experienced individual coach with at least three years’ full time practice having completed either a training equivalent to ACC (ICF) or Practitioner Level (EMCC).
  2. An external or internal Organisational Development consultant or HR Business Partner with a five-year+ career in this field, and extensive coaching experience. You will be expected to be able to present your theoretical framework for coaching individuals.
  3. An experienced Senior level team leader with coaching skills

In all cases you will need to secure a client team, or be a leader of your own team, in order to complete a case study over the course of the programme  – which will be an important opportunity to experiment and practise your developing Systemic Team Coaching skills.

I’ve heard that there is a Programme offered by the Global Team Coaching Institute. What is the difference to their programmes and Systemic Team Coach training?

The Global Team Coaching Institute also offers a Systemic Team Coaching stream, which at present consists of the Gateway (Foundation) Module and the Practitioner Module. A Senior Practitioner Module is planned for the future. This programme is led by Professor Peter Hawkins and Metaco’s directors are part of the Core Faculty.

Whilst the curriculum is very similar on both programmes, the major differences are:

– The GTCI programmes are delivered entirely online to large volumes of participants in each cohort, with only one cohort underway at any time.  The Systemic Team Coaching programmes are a hybrid of online and face-to-face training, with very restricted numbers of participants and several options to commence during the year.

– The GTCI programmes are mostly self-directed learning, whereas the STC programmes are largely experiential learning with the opportunity for dynamic flexibility, plenty of personal engagement and support from the lead faculty.

– The Systemic Team Coaching programmes are scheduled over 3-day modules allowing for faster progression of the programme. The GTCI programmes consist of one-two hour sessions, over a significantly longer period of time.

– The STC programmes are ICF accredited, the GTCI programmes are EMCC accredited.
