Leadership performs in the context of change

Next month we’re hosting Peter Hawkins, non-executive board member of Metaco and Professor of Leadership at Henley in the UK for a number of events. Prior to his trip, we spoke to him on the future of leadership and why systemic team coaching is so vital in the current context of rapid change.

We know that the world becoming more Volatile, Unpredictable, Complex and Ambiguous but what are the complexities around this?

Leaders aren’t just having to deal with the rapid rate of change. There are the challenges of working virtually, internationally and multi-culturally not to mention multi-generationally. Leaders are having to work simultaneously to run the business and transform it. The established hierarchical, directive management style that has prevailed over the past century no longer delivers results.

How has coaching and leadership development needed to adapt?

The real challenges in organizations are not in the parts or the people – but in the connections but we tend to consult to the parts and coach the individuals! In addition executive learning, for the most part, has been largely theoretical and conducted off site and out of context. Today’s leaders need an in context revolutionary approach that connects all stakeholders; in essence a Systemic Team approach.

What is the basis of Systemic Team Coaching and who is it for?

‘…a High performing team: effectively meets and communicates in a way that raises morale and alignment, engages with all the teams key stakeholder groups in a way that grows performance and provides constant learning and development for all its members and the collective team.’

Systemic Team Coaching is a transformational process that functions at the intersection of leadership development, strategy and organizational design, taking an “outside-in and future-back” perspective.  The application of Systemic Team Coaching is relevant for boards, executive teams, leadership teams, interdisciplinary teams, global teams and operational or networked teams. I’ll be sharing more about this in my visit to South Africa in June.

Lastly what can we expect from your trip to South Africa?

I’ll be in South Africa to celebrate the acquisition of Metaco by Comair and to facilitate training for coaches. South Africa represents a diverse and exciting economy and one which I think particularly benefits in its various contexts from a Systemic approach. I’ve had a long term interest in South Africa and look forward to this visit particularly as South Africa finds itself in an interesting period of change.
